Our Issues
Power and a Coastline Worth Protecting.
Long Island’s economy and quality of life depend on energy that is safe, affordable, and reliable — and on protecting the water, air, and shoreline that make this a place people want to stay. Action Long Island has been at the table on both for three decades.
From the future of LIPA to drinking-water protection and business recycling, our Energy & Environmental Task Force advocates practical solutions that keep rates competitive and the Island clean.

Why It Matters
Affordable Energy. Clean Water.
Our Energy Task Force identifies and advocates for solutions to Long Island’s energy challenges — pressing for additional reliable, reasonably priced, alternative power generation, faster resolution of siting issues, and a power grid ready to support future growth. On the environmental side, we help employers, building owners, and local governments collect, process, and recycle the solid waste they generate, and we support drinking-water protection to ensure safe, clean, reliable water.
Energy costs and environmental health aren’t separate questions on an island — they’re the same question. Our objective is simple: safe, affordable, environmentally friendly, and competitive energy for every Long Islander.
Our Track Record
A Voice on Long Island’s Power.
- In December 1993, developed an early plan for the public takeover of LILCO — advising against absorbing the Shoreham nuclear debt — that helped shape the path to the Long Island Power Authority. More on LIPA →
- Issued position papers advocating that LIPA remain an independent public authority and retain ownership of its transmission and distribution system as a competitive “energy highway.”
- Launched Operation LI Ratepayer to give Long Island energy consumers a stronger voice in decisions about generation, repowering, and rates.
- Founded the Long Island Energy Cooperative to lower energy costs for local businesses, and pushed for statutes letting smaller LI companies access lower-cost power from the New York Power Authority.
- Launched the first recycling forum for the business community across Babylon, Huntington, Islip, and Smithtown, and championed drinking-water protection.
Where We’re Focused Now
The Work Ahead.
Our current priorities carry the same objective into a changing grid:
- Reliable, reasonably priced power and faster resolution of generation and siting decisions.
- Expanding clean and alternative energy — including offshore wind and solar — without sacrificing affordability or reliability.
- Protecting Long Island’s sole-source aquifer and coastline as development and climate pressures grow.
